How to Choose a Supplement: a label checklist from Dr. Scott Kirchner, D.C.
How to read a supplement label and what to ask before you buy.
From Monarch Bay Chiropractic, Dana Point and Mission Viejo.
Before you buy
- Ask your physician or pharmacist first, especially if you: take prescription medicines; are pregnant or nursing; have surgery coming up; are managing a health condition. Some supplements interact with medicines (NIH Office of Dietary Supplements).
- Keep a list of everything you take, and bring it to every doctor visit.
On the label
- An independent quality seal, such as USP Verified or NSF Certified. These seals check that the product contains what the label says and isn't contaminated. They don't show that a product works.
- The Supplement Facts panel: the serving size; servings per container; the amount of each ingredient; the % Daily Value.
- Amounts far above 100% of the Daily Value: ask about them. Some vitamins and minerals have upper limits.
- "Proprietary blend": the label doesn't show how much of each ingredient is inside.
- Other ingredients: check for allergens, colors and sweeteners.
- The expiration or best-by date, the lot number and the storage directions.
Claims to watch for
- Supplements may say how they support the body's normal structure or function, with the FDA disclaimer.
- They may not claim to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent a disease. Skip any product that does, or that promises fast or guaranteed results.
After you start
- Take it as labeled or as your doctor directs.
- Tell your doctor about any side effects.
